Space Traveler Discloses Depression Following Wave of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after being subjected to a “tsunami of harassment” in the wake of a historic all-female space mission.

The 34-year-old activist – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space in April, which also included high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the experience, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the vicious response buried her dreams under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the days following the flight.

She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Ms. Nguyen, who has dedicated her work to female health science and conducted tests during the mission, said everything she had worked for – including her studies and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her background – was overshadowed under the avalanche of misogyny.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her time as a student, leading to a years-long quest for justice.

In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the followers whose support pulled her through. “You all saved me,” she said.

She concluded that despite the negativity, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, including increased focus on her scientific work and platforms for her activism.

The fully automated spacecraft lifted off from its launch site in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a 11-minute journey that passed the edge of space.

The team of pioneers also included experts in multiple disciplines.
