The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the United States on five European individuals involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have led organised efforts to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will not stand for these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined France in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
