What Did Ethiopian Officials Declared?

Ethiopia's, being landlocked, demands for access to the Red Sea through Eritrean territory has triggered a heated rhetorical conflict.

PM Abiy Ahmed initially stated publicly in last year that his nation's sea access was an vital issue, statements that Eritrean authorities rejected.

Ties between the both governments have often been tense. Following a decades-long struggle for freedom, the Eritrean state, which has a long sea border, officially seceded from Ethiopia in 1993, leaving it without sea access.

In 1998, a military clash erupted in which over a hundred thousand people were killed.

Current Comments from Ethiopia's Government

Prime Minister Abiy and military leader Field Marshal Birhanu Jula have directly stated ownership of Eritrea's coastal city of the port of Assab – about 60km from the frontier - and hinted at the desire to take it by force.

In early September, the Prime Minister said Ethiopia's "error" of being denied passage to the Red Sea as a because of Eritrea secession would be "addressed tomorrow".

The Ethiopian envoy to Kenya, retired Gen Bacha Debele, said that the port was "Ethiopian property" and would be given back "using武力".

Eritrea's Response to the Claims

In the face of ongoing challenges from Ethiopian officials, Eritrea's response has been limited to short statements on social media from Information Minister the minister.

Officials have denied Ethiopia's demand for maritime entry describing it as "risky" and a "harmful plan" of "expansionism" – a policy of reclaiming previous domains.

Government spokespeople alerted on mid-September that efforts to justify "flagrant aggression" would have major implications for the Ethiopian government and its regional partners and is a "limit that should not be crossed|violated|breached".

Defense Activities on the Ground

So far, there are little evidence of large-scale army activities in the boundary zones between the two countries.

Nevertheless, in the country, state television has shown completion events of numerous trainees at multiple army bases.

The leader of staff section of the armed forces, the officer, commented lately in an discussion that the defense forces was in a "reliable position" as "many thousands of young people" were joining it, which he said was "a warning to our opponents".

Past Roots of the Conflict

For decades from 1890, the territory was ruled by Italian colonisers.

Following Italy's defeat, it was then administered by the British military before evolving into a federated part of the Ethiopian empire.

But in the early 1960s the Ethiopian emperor ended this arrangement and the region became completely integrated into the Ethiopian state.

A thirty-year armed struggle occurred, ending with the government's loss in the early 1990s. Autonomy was then confirmed by voters in a plebiscite in 1993.

Briefly in the 1990s, there were positive ties between the governments in Ethiopia's capital and Asmara, but they disagreed over the specific demarcation of their common border, leading to conflict in 1998.

Even though this concluded in a ceasefire agreement in 2000, it was never fully implemented, and the two nations stayed at loggerheads.

This ended in 2018, when Abiy made gestures to Eritrea's leader Isaias Afwerki. The both leaders signed a statement that the hostilities was over – a decision that won Abiy the prestigious award.

The two governments were then allies in the country's previous internal conflict in the northern region.

But relations have later worsened once more.
